Food had run out. and we hoped time had not run out for us as well.
Our packs were designed to be carried on scooters, not on men.
Improvising we used semi inflated tubes as shoulder harnesses.
We passed through a place called the Valley of Boulders…
…and in the entire area this was the only place we could stand together.
On our way out we took many breaks.
Resting our heavy packs on the huge boulders.
You can see the semi inflated tubes used to take the weight of Peters pack.
Aubrey with his gear in a plastic ground sheet slung over his shoulder.
Wishing we could take our cumbersome packs off...
...but we knew if we did we’d never get them on again.
We saw some trees and hoped it would be the Palms.
Only to find another bend and another plane to cross.
Now we knew the hell and frustration previous expeditions had suffered.
Tormenting us was the realization that if we had our scooters we could have driven for miles.
But this was not to be, the canyon had taken its toll.
We were too exhausted to explore the beautiful rock formations...
...all they were, was another obstacle in the way of getting out.
Rather than risk a broken leg we clambered over rocks instead of walking through the mud slime.
Adding to our collection of fools gold.
